Meat Animals
WARNING: This section contains educational information regarding our meat animals

Farm to Table
At the Urban Chicks Homestead we raise both rabbits and quail for meat. Both are a great source of protein for both humans and pets. We process rabbits and quail both for human consumption and raw food diets for pets.

Raising livestock in an Urban setting is not an option for us, so we opted to raise smaller animals that would provide both nutrition but also a quick turn around time between birth and butcher. While it may seem cruel to some, we feel that it is important to not only know where our meat is coming from, but that it is raised ethically and sustainably. By raising it ourself we can rest assured knowing that is exactly what we are getting.

Utilizing the Blessing
Not only are we concerned about the treatment of our animals before they are butchered, but we care deeply about utilizing as much as we possibly can from each animal. Our meat rabbits are butchered for meat, the pelt is saved, and the bones are used to create a nutritious bone broth. The ears and feet also make excellent treats for our dogs. By doing this we are getting the most out of each investment into the animals while also honoring the life they lived.

The Gift That Keeps
On Giving
One of the biggest reasons we chose to raise quail and rabbits is because they are prolific producers, meaning the time required for reproduction, growth, and butchering is very short compared to most livestock raised for meat. The quail also provide us with eggs. During the pandemic we all saw the price of food rise and we realized that unless we started raising animals and growing produce we would lose access to healthy meal options. We are so grateful to be able to raise our own food. We would encourage everyone to either take the leap or develop a relationship with local farmers!
