This recipe has been tried and tested. It’s one of our many staples here in our kitchen! At Urban Chicks, we aim to utilize animals to their maximum potential. This means reusing their carcass after we have picked it for a meal.

Our rich broth is used in numerous recipes here. However, we didn’t create this on our own. This recipe was learned from the rabbit community! Being part of this community has taught us many ways to utilize and substitute meat from our rabbits.

Nutritious & Delicious Broth

Your Ingredients

  • Meat Bones

  • Onion - 1

  • Carrots - 3

  • Peppercorn - 2 pinches

  • Bay Leaf - 3

  • Celery - 2 or 3 stalks

Directions

Omit the animal carcass if you desire a vegetable broth, and add more vegetables to compensate for the carcass.

  1. Set Up Your Crockpot

Get your crockpot ready. Turn it on low for overnight cooking. If you need a quicker option, switch it to high.

  2. Prep Your Ingredients

Take the carcass and place it in the crockpot. Next, add the carrots, celery, onions, and spices.

  3. Add Water

Fill the crockpot with water until it covers all the ingredients.

  4. Mix and Monitor

Stir occasionally to mix the flavors. If water evaporates, add more to keep everything covered.

  5. Strain the Broth

Once done, strain your concoction over a large bowl. (You can feed the strainer full to your chickens!)

  6. Preserve or Use

Grab your jars and process them if you plan on preserving the broth. Otherwise, your broth is ready for use!

Tips for Customization

Why Homemade Broth?

Making your own broth is not just about saving money. It's also about knowing exactly what goes into your food. You can control the flavors and ensure everything is organic. Plus, it’s a great way to reduce waste. Using every part of the animal is a sustainable practice that benefits both you and the environment.
